For almost six decades the brand Missoni has been the synthesis between innovation and tradition: on one hand it challenged the standards of fashion and suggested a futuristic style that recalls the Italian avant-garde of the beginning of the twentieth century; on the other hand it uses classic materials like wool and inherits the centennial Italian culture of the spun yarn.
Heart of the maison’s production is Missoni Home, whose creations are known and appreciated in the world. The Missoni brand is the product of the genius of two stylists, Rosita and Ottavio Missoni. Through Rosita’s family the brand inherited the sound Italian textile tradition, legacy of her grandfathers’ embroidered-cloths factory. Ottavio Missoni added his personal passion for wool and knitwear and his innovative skills: a world-famous athlet, who won numerous prizes with the Italian National Track Team, he founded in 1947 a knitwear venture, which produced wool track-suits, later adopted as uniforms by the Italian team at the London 1948 Olympics.
These Olympic games marked a turning point for Ottavio: not only did he participate as an athlete, but it was at this event that he met Rosita, his future wife and co-founder of the brand. Missoni’s unmistakable style was born from the wedding between Ottavio’s sense of color and Rosita’s creativity for the cut. This style finds its greatest expression in Missoni Home’s dreamlike modern rugs, which are sometime vintage, sometime kaleidoscopic and modern, but always a delight for eye and mind.
Patchworks, rules and blazes, the characteristic zig-zag, the ethnic motive and the iridescent jacquard are the emblems of Missoni’s design and constitute the so called “put-together” style, because it dared to draw near chromatic and geometrical grafisms that none had yet dared.
